Robert J. Miller & Associates, Inc. was founded in 1976 by Robert Miller, M.B.A., a former management analyst with the U.S. Department of Defense and grants development specialist with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (formerly the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare). Prior to these positions, Mr. Miller served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army, working as a hospital administrator and combat medic. He was awarded the Army Commendation and Bronze Star medals for his meritorious service while attached to the U.S. Army Headquarters in South Vietnam.
During his federal service, Mr. Miller served as a grants review specialist for over $150 million in federal health and education grants annually. He also participated in the design and implementation of the U.S. military’s first worldwide alcohol and drug abuse prevention and treatment program. During this period, Mr. Miller prepared U.S. Congressional testimony leading to the passage of the Health Programs Extension Act of 1973, which preserved the nation’s public investment in the health care delivery system during the turbulent final years of the Nixon Administration.
Following his departure from government service in 1976, Mr. Miller pulled together several of the most experienced grant writers in the nation to form RJMA. The first known consulting firm in the United States specializing in providing grants development services to the nonprofit sector. One of their first and most successful initiatives was the securing of $115 million to continue the work of the Regional Medical Programs. These programs eventually led to the formation of a national network of health systems agencies, which pioneered the development of Certificate of Need legislation for the healthcare industry.
RJMA was quickly recognized for its innovations in the acquisition and management of the vast amounts of information pertaining to the nation’s over 70,000 private and corporate foundations, as well as federal and state government grant-making agencies. Their uniquely designed computerized database management system enabled them to identify and track grant opportunities that the U.S. nonprofit community could otherwise only find through time consuming and labor-intensive analysis of printed materials.
Erica Miller joined Robert J. Miller & Associates, Inc. in 2011 as a bookkeeping assistant. She quickly moved up the ranks as director of operations, to chief operating officer and now holds the position as President and CEO. Over the past decade, Erica is credited with increasing gross sales and staff size, renovating the office building, establishing a new marketing program to grow RJMA through digital efforts and trade shows, and expanding company mission to include design and production of the nation’s largest online listing of grant opportunities for elementary and secondary education nationwide.
Not only is Ms. Miller credited with the above, but within her first six months of service as President and CEO she successfully launched RJMA’s mid-western office in Cleveland, Ohio. Thus proving that the future of RJMA is bright and boundless. Miller has also begun hiring remote employees. The expansion of RJMA will help them meet the growing demand for grant funding nationwide while also tapping into the talented pools of grant writers across the United States.
Erica received her BA and MA from John Carroll University. In 2018, Erica was honored in the sixth class of the Buffalo Business First’s 30 Under 30, receiving a perfect score from all judges.
Ms. Miller is actively involved in community activities including serving on the board of directors of Pursue Your It Foundation, Inc., which is committed to helping at-risk youth, ages 11 to 17 develop their fullest human potential. She is also on the planning committee for the Hospice Foundation and is a member of the Western New York chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and the Buffalo chapter of New York State Women, Inc.
Today, RJMA has grown into a highly respected grants development and fundraising consulting firm, headquartered in Buffalo, NY.
